英语中有很多连词在句子中一方面起连接词语、句子的作用， 另一方面还可以用来表达否定意义。这些常用连词在各种考试中频繁出现，也是我们学习英语必须掌握的内容。

在英语学习过程中比较常见的否定连词有：before（不等……就），lest（以防）， unless（除非），but that（若不是），or else（否则）， save that（除了），except that（除了），nor（也不）等。比如：

But that you helped us, we should have failed.假使你们不帮助我们，那么我们早就失败了。再比如：Hurry up or else you will be late. 快点，否则你就要迟到了。下面再看三个大学英语四级曾经考过的试题。

1）They decided to chase the cow away____it did more damage.

A)unless B)before C)until D)although

这句话的意思是：他们决定赶走这头牛以免它造成更大的损失。这里选择了B) before，这里before就是指在造成损失之前就要把牛赶走。其他三个选项A)unless、C)until和D)although都不能表达这个意思。

2）We don’t need air-conditioning, ____.

A)nor can we afford it B)Neither can afford it

C)and nor we can afford it D)and we can neither afford it
