Its predecessor is Changsha Chengnan Academy, founded by Zhang Shi in 1161, a well-known Neo Confucianism scholar in the Southern Song Dynasty.

It was established as the Hunan Normal University in 1903, which adopted modern teacher education.

In 1949, it was renamed the First Normal School in Hunan Province.

It is not only the birthplace of Huxiang culture and one of the cradles of modern normal education, but also one of the sources of the Chinese Communist movement and the New Democratic Revolution.

It is also one of the birthplaces of Mao Zedong Thought and one of the birthplaces of Marxism in China .

它的前身为南宋著名理学家张栻于公元1161年创办的长沙城南书院，1903年始立为湖南师范馆，举办现代师范教育，1949年改名湖南省第一师范学校。

它不仅是湖湘文化的发祥地和中国现代师范教育的摇篮之一，还是中国共产主义运动和新民主主义革命的策源地之一，更是毛泽东思想的萌芽地和马克思主义中国化的发源地之一。
