1. Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired.

这是过去分词做宾补的句型,强调的是使某事被做, 通常指的不是主语自己做, 而是让别人做,如 "我理发 我照相 我修手表"理发指的是, 到理发店让别人为自己理发. I will have my hair cut.照相指的是自己的相被照. I had the photo of me taken yesterday. 修表也不是自己修, 而是拿到修理铺让别人修. I had my watch repaired 这和时态被动语态都没关系,这是过去分词做宾补,与宾语 是被动

2. The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.

教堂的钟很大，以前不分昼夜打点报时，但在很多年前遭到了毁坏，从此便无声无息了。

used to（过去常常）

要注意与be used to 以及get used to的区别：

used to 后跟强调动作的动词时表示"过去常常"；后面跟表示状态的词时，表示"曾经，一度"。used to 的后面跟。He used to play football here.他过去常在这儿踢足球。be used to表示"习惯于做某事"人作主语，后面用v ing形式--be used to doing ；如果是物来做主语的话，be used to表示"被用来做某事"，后面跟动词的原形---be used to do .举个例子：Tom is used to living in China. Tom 习惯来了在中国生活了。（Tom是主语）。Knives are used to cut= Knives are used for cutting.刀子是用来切割的。（knives作主语。）

be used to是"习惯..."的意思 ，后接 比如：He is used to getting up early他习惯了早起 I am used to her bad temper. 我习惯了她的。 get used to表示"渐渐习惯...."与"be used to"不同，get used to强调的是由"不习惯"到"习惯"的这个过程，而"be used to"所强调的只是"习惯了"这个状态 比如：The food here is not so tasty but you will get used to that.这里的伙食不怎么样，但你会慢慢习惯的 The food here is not so tasty but he is used to that.这里的伙食不怎么样，但是他"已经"习惯了

这句话比较长，中间用了 which 引导的定语从句，以及用 and 连接了两个并列结构，

主句：The big clock was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.

定语从句：The clock used to strike the hours day and night.

3.One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours!

一天夜里，我们的牧师突然被惊醒了，大钟又在"打点"报时了！

4. Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.

as well（也）：As well是，其义为"也"，相当于too，它一般放在句末，有时和连词and或but搭配使用。

与as well as的区别：

在A as well as B的结构里，的重点在 A，不在 B。因此，"He can speak Japanese as well as English．"的译文应该是："他不但会，而且会讲日语"，决不能译作："他不但会，而且会讲英语"。如果这样翻译，就是本末倒置了。as well as和 not only… but also…同义，但前者的语意重点和后者的语意重点恰好颠倒。

在下列句中，as well as表示"像…一样"的涵义： She as well as you is an English teacher． 她像你一样也是教师。 这里的用is，不用are，因为句中的是she，不是she和you。

10.' That's the trouble, vicar, ' answered Bill, ' It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it. '
