As a new Little Mermaid rolls out its cast list and The Lion King’s July 18 release date approaches, Disney is next turning its gaze toward Mulan. A first full trailer for the live-action remake of the 1998 animated film has arrived, starring Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei in the title role.

Disney dropped its latest trailerand poster appropriately during halftime of the FIFA Women’s World Cup,and well in advance of the film’s March 27, 2020 release. The sneak peekfootage downplays many musical or fantastical elements of the originalanimated adaptation—miss you, Mushu—but does nod toward the classic“Honor to Us All” song with a few notes playing over Mulan’s conversation withher parents. Disney released a first poster as well.

The film features Donnie Yen as Mulan’smentor, Commander Tung, along with Jason Scott Lee as Hun leader Böri Khan,Yoson An as ally/potential love interest Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as thewitch Xianniang and Jet Li as the emperor of China. Whale Rider director NikiCaro adapts a screenplay written by Elizabeth Martin, Lauren Hynek, Rick Jaffaand Amanda Silver.

I am not usually a big fan of Disney'slive-action remakes of their classic animated films, but I have to admit, thisis an effective, sumptuously eye-catching teaser for Mulan, one of myfavorites in the Disney oeuvre. We see our free-spirited heroine(played by Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei) riding her horse across theChinese countryside, only to come home to the news that her family's matchmakerhas found her an auspicious match. "It is decided," Mulan'sfather, Hua Zhou (Tzi Ma), says, perhaps sensing his daughter isn't exactly thrilledby the news. "It is what is best for our family."

But Mulan embodiesthem in her own way, as we see her secretly practicing martial arts beforerunning away to take her father's place in the emperor's army to fend off anattack by Hun warrior Bori Khan (Jason Scott Lee)—originally known as Shan Youin the original animated film.
