“约会”其实不是“约会”

Ah yes, another important but confusing common Chinglish mistake; one that if you make, could be the difference between keeping your boyfriend or girlfriend, or breaking up with them.

是的没错，今天我要再来纠正一个常见的经常容易让你混淆的中式英语错误！一旦用错，很容易让你跟你的男朋友或者女朋友造成误解，严重的甚至会导致分手！

The Chinese word I'm talking about it 约会. Easy in Chinese, but with its couple different translations, can cause some confusion in English. Let's look at these English words, and why understanding the difference is so important.

今天要跟你们讨论的这个词跟“约会”有关。在中文里很好理解，但是它在英文里却有几种不同的说法，有的词用英语说起来容易让人造成困惑。让我们先来看看几个英语单词，以及理解它们为什么会让你造成困惑，这非常重要。

Appointment

适用于商务、正式场合

This means a schedule for meeting. You and someone else confirm a time to meet. Usually used for business, or formal situation, such as when you schedule a visit to the doctor, or meet some colleagues for lunch. So it's a word to express that you have a scheduled meeting planned.

这是一个名词，表示的是一个见面的安排。你和对方确认了见面的时间。通常用于商务或正式场合，比如你定了一个时间去看医生，或者约了和同事一起吃午饭。这是一个用来表达已经安排好的“见面”的词。

Date

verb / noun

适用于夫妻、情侣、暧昧关系

This is completely different from appointment! Well, the noun still expresses a scheduled meeting, but with one big difference - dates are romantic! They focus on love and attraction. So, a guy who likes a girl might ask her togo on a date, or a boyfriend and girlfriend couldmake a dateat a nice restaurant at 8pm tonight.

这个词跟我们之前讲到的“appointment完全不同”！如果是以名词的形式，它依旧用来表示一个已经安排好的“见面”，但是有一个巨大的不同点在于，这个“见面”是“浪漫的”！通常都着重于“爱”和“吸引”上。所以，如果一个男生喜欢上了一个女生，就会问他要不要“date——约会”，或者男女朋友之间今晚也可以在一个很棒的餐厅里有一个“date——约会”。

The verb, is similar, but means when two people are continually seeing each other romantically, like 暧昧. So “They are dating” would mean not just one appointment, but that they romantically see each other over many weeks or months, with the possibility of a deeper relationship in the future.

如果是以把它当做动词，用法也很相似，但是它表达的是当两个人不断地和对方有浪漫的约会，有点暧昧的感觉。所以，“they are dating”表达的不只是一个“见面”，也可以用来表达他们俩不断“浪漫地”见面，也许未来还会有更深入的发展。

举个例子，让你更了解这两个词的区别

It's very important that you do not confuse these two meanings of 约会. Let me give you some examples why.

把这两个关于“约会”的单词搞懂非常重要。我给你几个例子，并且告诉你为什么一定要弄懂它们。

I can't wait until after work! I have a date with a smart and funny girl I met last week.

我等不及赶紧下班了！上周认识了一个聪明又有趣的女生，下班之后跟她有个约会。

Note:If you sayappointment, then it shows there is no romance, that she is ONLY a friend and nothing more, and that you have no interest to be in a relationship.

提醒：如果这里你说“appointment”，那么你所表达的“约会”就跟浪漫无关，就表示你所约会的对象只是一个普通朋友，你也没有兴趣跟她在一起。

Tomorrow I have an appointmentwith my doctor.

我明天预约了我的医生去找他看病。

Note:If you saydate, it sounds like you and your doctor are 暧昧! Is he/she your lover? Probably not!

提醒：如果这里你说“date”，那么它听起来就感觉你跟那位医生正处于暧昧阶段！那位医生是你的男朋友或女朋友吗？应该不是吧！

Archer and Lana used to date, but broke up. Now Lana is dating Malloy.

阿哲和拉娜以前也会约会，但是他们现在分手了。拉娜现在的约会对象是马洛伊。

Note:Both dates here are verbs, and show two people romantically seeing each other over a period of time.

提醒：这里的两个“date”都是动词，它们表达的意思都是两个人在一段时间内浪漫的约会。

So ok, I hope that helps! Next time you want to tell someone that you have a meeting with a coworker, be sure to say appointment, and not date…well, unless that coworker and you are "very very close"... You know more than just friends, haha.

Remember if you want a date with a new handsome guy or pretty girl, but you ask them for an "appointment", you will probably never have a chance at love, because it sounds like an official business meeting. That's soooo not romantic.

还有，如果你想和一位帅哥或者美女约会，如果你说“appointment”，那怕是你对“爱”有很深的误解，因为这听起来像是一个非常商务的见面。一点都不浪漫！
