“No.”不是“Number”的缩写，为什么可以表示数字？

数字是我们日常生活中每天都会遇到的存在。英语表达中，数字经常和“No.”一起出现。但是关于“No.”，很多人并不了解。

很多人都误以为“No.”是“Number”的缩写，所以可以用来表示数字。但是为什么是“No.”而不是“Nu.”呢？

其实，“No.”并不是“Number”的缩写！“No.”是“numero”开头和结尾的缩写。“numero”是一个拉丁语单词，它的复数形式是“numerus”。随后被英语引进，演变成“number”。

因此，从意思上看，“No.”相当于“Number”。但是不能说“No.”是“Number”，也不能说“No.”来源于“Number”。

⏰例句：

They live at No.17.

他们住在17号。

这里需要注意的是，为了和单词“no”区分，“No.”一定要加“.”。

2⏰说到这里，就不得不说我们总说的“number one”。很多人认为它的意思是“第一”，但是更准确的解释的“头号人物（或事物）”。

⏰例句：

She's still the world number one in tennis.

她仍然是世界头号网球选手。

I'm your number one fan.

我是你的超级崇拜者。

除此之外，“number one”还可以表示“自己”，美式英语还可以写成“numero uno”。

例句：

Frank is completely selfish - he only cares about number one.

4、beyond/without number 数不胜数，不计其数

例句：

5、by numbers 机械地，死板地，按部就班地

例句：

This is painting by numbers - there's nothing original here.

6、do a number on sb 伤害某人；打败某人；使某人难堪

例句：

I really did a number on my ankle when I fell.
