地铁为什么是metro（为什么地铁在北京叫subway）

如今的地铁四通八达，我们可谓是住在轨道上的城市。然而坐地铁的时候，你可否留意不同的城市地铁的英语叫法居然还有区别？

首先我们来看看国内的主要代表城市地铁的叫法：广州和上海采用 metro 的叫法，但北京地铁的叫法却采用了 subway，其实国内对地铁的翻译没有严格的规定，都是按照当时及当地的实际情况以及翻译习惯而采用的英文。

国内还有其他城市对地铁的不同称呼，比如香港的地铁称为Mass Transit Railway，简称 MTR。

地铁的不同说法

对国内地铁叫法有了初步了解后，我们再来看看国际上地铁的叫法区别：

underground：地铁，地下的

虽然世界上第一条地铁是1863年在英国伦敦建成的，叫做 “Metropolitan and District Railway”（都会区铁路），但是英国人并没有将之称为metro，而是将地铁称为 underground，是地底下的通道。

例句

They went on the underground.

他们乘地铁去的。

She commutes by underground.

她乘地铁上下班。

另外，英国人也喜欢将 underground 称为 tube（管道），地下铁长长一条通道就像管道，于是就有了 tube 的说法。

例句

It's easy to get around London on the tube.

乘地铁逛伦敦很方便。、

There's a tube station a couple of blocks away from here.

从这里走几个街区就有一个地铁站。

subway：地铁

subway 常用在北美地区，其中的sub就有表示地下，在...下面的意思，北京的地铁就使用了subway这种叫法。

这里要注意的是：在英式英语里，确实存在 subway 的说法，但意思并不是“地铁”，而是指“行人从街道的一边穿行到另一边的地下通道”，是“地下通道”的意思。

例句

I took/rode the subway to midtown.

我乘坐地铁去市中心。

No one on the subway seemed to mind how crowded it was.

地铁上似乎没有人会介意有多拥挤。

metro：地铁，大都市

metro 这个词最开始来源于来自法语 métropolitain 的缩写，后来简化为métro, 最后也被英语吸收成为 metro 表示地铁，虽然很多城市有地铁 metro 的叫法，但它尤指巴黎地铁。

metro 除了表示地铁外，还有大都市，大城市的含义。

例句

We took the metro to the museum. = We went by metro to the museum.

我们搭乘地铁去博物馆。

The event was attended by people from all over the metro [=metropolitan] area.

这次活动的参加者来自整个大都会区。

总结：

metro 除了指“地铁”，在欧洲大陆地区还可以指“城轨系统”；subway 主要使用在北美地区，但也有一些北美城市使用 metro；subway 在英式英语中，指“地下通道”；underground 主要在英国地区使用，但也有例外，比如苏格兰的格拉斯哥就使用 subway； 至于亚洲地区，“地铁”翻译不统一，不同地区说法都不一样。

因此，我们只要大概记住它们的大致原则：在美国用 subway；在英国用 underground；在世界其它地区用 metro。
