第八课：宇宙的思考

Albert Einstein was one of the greatest minds of the last century.阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦是上世纪最伟大的人。

During his lifetime,Einstein thought about the universe and solved many problems in physics.一生中，爱因斯坦思考宇宙，解答了物理学的很多难题。

Einstein is most famous for his Theory of Relativity.爱因斯坦最著名的还是他的相对论。

Einstein's early years爱因斯坦的早期：

Einstein was born in Germany in 1879.爱因斯坦1879年出生于德国。

After he finished school, he went on to study physics in Switzerland.当他小学毕业，他去了瑞士继续学习物理学。

In 1905, Einstein began to write articles and became a pioneer in the field of modem physics.1905年，爱因斯坦开始写论文，并成为现代物理学领域的先驱。

For one of those articles, he received the Nobel Prize in 1921.凭借其中的一篇论文，于1921年他获得了诺贝尔奖。

Einstein taught at universities in Switzerland and Germany.爱因斯坦在瑞士和德国的大学里教学。

He left Germany in 1933 and went to teach at Princeton University in the United States.1933年他离开了德国，继续在美国的普林斯顿大学里教学。

Einstein died in 1955. He signed his last letter before he passed away.爱因斯坦于1955年去世。他辞世前还签了最后一封信件。

The letter asked people to give up nuclear weapons.这封信要求人们放弃核武器。

Lesson 9: China's Most Famous "Farmer"

第九课：中国著名的“农民”

A scientist in China had a dream when he was a child.孩提时，这位中国科学家就有一个梦想。

In the dream, he grew a new type of rice that was as big as a peanut.在梦里，他种植出一种大如花生的新型水稻。

The plant allowed farmers to rest in its shade.农民可以在这种植物的树荫下休息。

That child was Yuan Longping. Yuan grew up and became the "Father of Hybrid Rice".这个孩子就是袁隆平。袁（隆平）长大了，并且成为了“水稻之父”。

In the 1960s, a few years after he finished his studies in agriculture at university,19世纪60年代，大学农业专业毕业一些年后，

he came up with an idea for hybrid rice.他想到了（培育）杂交水稻的想法。

Since then, he has spent much of his time researching and developing new varieties.从那以后，他花了很多时间去研究和开发新的品种。

In 1973, together with other scientists, he succeeded in developing hybrid rice.1973年，与其他科学家一起，袁隆平成功地开发出超级水稻。

The introduction of this new product made China a leader in rice production.这种新型水稻的引入使得中国水稻产量位居前列。

For this, he became known as the "Father of Hybrid Rice".因此，他以“杂交水稻”之父闻名。

In 1980, the technology for hybrid rice was introduced to the United States and later, to many other countries around the world.1980年，杂交水稻技术引入到美国， 之后相继引入到世界其他国家。

Because of Dr. Yuan's hard work, China now produces enough rice every year to feed its people.因为袁隆平院士的努力研究，现在中国每年的粮食产量足够养育中国人口。

Now Dr. Yuan is working on developing super hybrid rice.现在，袁隆平院士正潜心开发超级杂交水稻。

In his spare time, Dr. Yuan loves playing the violin and listening to music.闲暇时间，袁隆平院士喜爱弹钢琴，听音乐。

Every night, he reads for half an hour before he goes to sleep.He likes swimming, too.每天晚上，睡觉前他都会阅读半小时。他也很喜欢游泳。
