spend的过去式spent，spend可以用来表示“花（钱、时间）”等。spend的主语必须是人，这些大家都知道，我就不多说了。今天讲一些大家不知道的用法。

①spend the night with sb.

表面上看，是和某人一起花费了一个夜晚。所以意思是“在某人家过一夜”。比如男同学们想要去网吧通宵，就可以说：

I will spend the night with my friend tonight. 我今晚要在朋友家过夜。

注意后面的单词是tonight，而不是together。如果写错，意思就变化大了。

②spend the night together

What happens when boys and girls spend the night together? 男孩和女孩共度一晚会发生什么事？

看出点端倪了吗？spend the night together往往暗含着两人晚上一般会发生点羞羞的事情。所以男同学在说晚上去朋友家的时候，别用错表达了哦。

③spend a penny

penny n. (美)分，便士

spend a penny，表面上看是花一美分或一便士。还记得前天刚提到的比喻型表达吗？

在这里，spend a penny表示的是意思是“去方便，去解手”，相当于use the toilet的意思。原因是因为旧时英国公厕的自动门须投一便士硬币后方能使用。所以现在当对别人说spend a penny，是一个比较委婉的说法。

Alf's wife has never discovered / that she married a dustman and she never will, / for Alf has just found another job.

这句话可以拆分为3部分。第2部分中，she never will是省略的用法，省略了前面的discover that she married a dustman。后面for … 表示原因。

比如我们因为某事感谢某人，可以使用thank sb. for sth.
