祭红釉色似初凝的鸡血，深沉安定，莹润均匀，釉中无龟裂纹理，因祭红器作祭祀郊坛之用，故名。祭红始创于明永乐、宣德年间。在古时皇室常以它作祭器，人们在配制祭红釉料时，往往将黄金、珊瑚、玛瑙、玉石等珍贵之物掺入釉料中，真可谓不惜工本。即使这样，也往往烧制不出好的成品。由于祭红釉瓷器历来难烧，因此它比其它色釉更为名贵。
