For Chinese couples, wedding photos are not simply about having a photographer show up on the big day.

对于中国新人来说，结婚照不仅仅是摄影师在婚礼当天拍照那么简单。

They can be elaborate affairs involving costumes, make-up artists, camera assistants and trips overseas, sometimes even underwater, and take up as much as a quarter of the wedding budget.

精心筹划的还有服装，化妆师，摄影助理，以及海外游，有时还在水下拍照，费用甚至要占到婚礼预算的四分之一。

“探寻中国人对婚纱照的爱”

Red dresses, stylists, camera crews and a perfect kiss in front of a sandstone building. On any given weekday, The Bund in Shanghai looks like a scene from a European rom-com. Couples dressed in colorful, elaborate formal wear bustle from site to site, enacting fairytale scenes of marriage, with a team of stylists and photographers in tow.

大红色的礼服，三五个造型师，一组拍摄小分队，砂岩建筑前一个完美的吻。在任何一个工作日，上海外滩都像是拍欧式浪漫爱情剧的外景地。新人们身穿华美精致的礼服，换了一个又一个场景，在造型师和摄影师的陪同下，排演着一幕幕成婚童话。

Intrigued by the enchanting entourage, passerby and photographer Olivia Martin-McGuire inquired about the phenomena only to learn that it was not a mass wedding or movie, but a rather common pre-wedding photo shoot. “I was enchanted by an entire nation of adults dressing-up in fantasy attire as part of a new national ritual," she says as she started documenting the shoots.

从一旁路过的摄影师奥利维亚•马丁•麦圭尔被这迷人的氛围深深吸引，她问了才知道这不是集体婚礼，也不是拍电影，而是在拍普通的婚纱照。在记录拍摄前她表示，“我当时很着迷，因为整个国家的成年人都会穿上盛装这样拍，这已成了新传统。”

文章提到两位在伦敦拍照的新人——赵志文（音译）和刘怡萱（音译）在北京相识后来到伦敦学习。两人订婚后将回国完婚，所以决定在伦敦先拍婚纱照。

Zhiwen Zhao and Yixuan Liu met in Beijing before moving to London a few years ago to study. They're engaged and will soon return to China to be married. Before they go they've decided to have their pre-wedding photographs taken in London.

上面提到那么多次，小伙伴们有没有好奇，为啥咱的婚纱照要叫pre-wedding photo而不是wedding photo呢？

It's a Chinese custom for couples to have their wedding photos taken before they are married, rather than on the day of the nuptials. "We wanted to take some sweet moments to share with the guests," says Yixuan. On the wedding day, the photos will be shown to the guests on cards, via big screens and perhaps on video.

中国有个传统是在新人结婚前拍婚纱照，而不是婚礼当天。（←所以wedding前面要加pre，而西方人一般认为婚礼前见到新娘子穿婚纱不吉利，都是婚礼当天拍照。）怡萱表示，“我们想和宾客们分享一些甜蜜的瞬间。”婚礼当天，这些照片会通过卡片、大屏幕或者放录像展示给宾客们。

In China, pre-wedding photography is a huge - and lucrative - industry. Zhiwen and Yixuan are part of a small but rapidly growing number of young couples who are choosing to have their photographs taken overseas, often in front of famous landmarks.

Hundreds of middle-class Chinese couples fly to Britain each year and pay thousands of pounds a time to hire teams of photographers for shoots in locations such as Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, York and Cornwall’s Land’s End.

数百位中国中产新人每年飞往伦敦，掷数千磅聘请摄影师团队在牛津、剑桥、布莱顿、约克和康沃尔的“天涯海角”等地拍照。

Brides-to-be pose in up to six outfits a day for dreamy images against romantic English backdrops, which will be shown as slideshows and videos at their real weddings, back home in China.

The trend has been fuelled in part by the popularity of period drama Downton Abbey, which drew 160 million viewers in China, and a Chinese superstar singer-actor, Jay Chou, who married in Selby Abbey, in Yorkshire, then held a reception in Castle Howard, made famous by the 1980s TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited.
