想是过子夜不久,师父又起来读书了,时钟刚指着5:00的时候,就发来了三条短信息,开示佛法的内涵。

It was just after midnight. Master woke up again to read. He sent three SMS messages instructing on the deeper meaning of the Dharma when the clock had just turned five.

“道次第即是《法华经》开权显实、会三归一的思想,是佛陀在最后几年才宣讲的,究竟了义。中国古代祖师很有智慧,如智者大师等,用十天干、十二地支将常讲的科判进行了分解和排序,让我们对道次第的完整性与系统性有了更深入的认识。比如《法华文句》,后人讲解《法华经》,多依智者大师之释,科判本身就有注解的意思,而许多人却不晓得这一点,又如何能够很好地理解道次第呢?真是可惜!”

“The stages of the path to enlightenment is the same as the idea of the Lotus Sutra, which sets aside the expedient dharmas to speak the true Dharma, and unites the three vehicles into one. Taught by the Buddha in the last few years of his life, the doctrine in the Lotus Sutra is ultimate and makes plain the whole truth. The ancient Chinese patriarchs were very wise. Take Great Master Zhizhe for example. He broke down and sequenced the textual organisation with the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches. As a result, we are able to have a deeper understanding of the integrity and systematisation of the stages of the path to enlightenment. For instance, he wroteWords and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra. Later generations explained theLotus Sutramainly based on his annotations. Textual organisation itself is a way of annotation, but many people are not aware of it. Then how can they understand the stages of the path to enlightenment well? What a pity!”

“有时一句即一科,如果把经文与科判分开读,无疑会割裂文义。古代的注解是同经文分开的,祖师们不敢把自己的思想搁在经里面,即‘经疏别行’,要看注解,要经疏对着看;后人怕麻烦,就把两者编在一起了。”

Sometimes, one sentence presents a complete section itself . Reading the sutra and annotations separately will disrupt the meaning of the sutra. In ancient times, annotations were separated from the sutra since patriarchs dared not to include their own understandings alongside with the sutra, hence the tradition of “separating sutra with its commentary'. However, in order to understand the annotation, constant referencing to sutra and commentaries were necessary, so in later times, in need of minimizing the trouble of finding them in different locations, people started to compile sutras and commentaries together.

“蕅益大师的《法华会义》把智者大师的思想、科判都汇在一起了,很了不起。而许多人看不懂科判,认为是累赘,不知不觉就取消了,恢复经文的清样,究竟我们的理解是进步了还是退步了?”

The Essence of The Lotus Sutraby Master Ou Yi made incredible contribution by combining Master Zhizhe’s Buddhist philosophy and his outlines on the sutra texts in one place. However, this type of effort was not appreciated by many since people found the annotations hard to understand, hence regarding them an encumbrance for the reader. With time, annotations were removed from the later volumes and only the scriptural texts remained. Is it an indication that our understanding has truly progressed or regressed?

我们对《法华文句》《法华会义》这样的书籍,往往束之高阁。一方面,从文字上讲,读起来确实比较吃力,而要理解祖师们要表达的意思,本身就得建立在文字基础上,所以前者不过关,后者更谈不上。另一方面,也会觉得,诵经就好了,何必读论呢?

We often lay aside and neglect books like The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra and Fahuahuiyi(The Essence of the Lotus Sutra). On one hand, they are indeed difficult to read as far as their language is concerned. Yet language is the basis for us to understand what the patriarchs meant to say. So, if you fail to understand the language, you cannot understand the meaning. On the other hand, we may think that reading only the sutra is enough, why bother any more with commentaries?

师父偶尔开示的诵经读论心得,于我们而言无疑是一份精神的营养品。师父的目的,是希望我们的身心能够得到滋养。经文中所蕴涵的道次第内涵,如果没有善知识宣说,虽智亦不能了解。

Master sometimes shares with us his insights after reading sutras or commentaries, which indeed can be precious spiritual nutrition for us. By doing so he wishes to nuture us, bodily and mentally, with benefits of the Dharma. Without the guidance of a good teacher, the teaching of the stages of the path to enlightenment cannot be penetrated, even by the wise.
