每个小城，都有过一个穿着旧军装的糟老头

他佩戴着褪色的勋章，面容枯槁

在街头，一遍遍走动着

没有人知道，他在等一枚子弹，还是寻找一个战友

每个小城，都有一家门可罗雀的小面馆

老板娘涂着廉价的脂粉，坐在油腻的窗前

她手中的毛衣，织了拆，织了又拆

没有人知道，她为什么笑了，又为什么皱眉

每个小城，都停留过一个神秘的马戏团

他们在泥泞的街头，一次次吆喝着

有人吐火焰，有人吞刀子，有人顶着一摞碗

没有人知道，在他们宿过的桥洞下，埋了什么，哭着

每个小城，都有女人啜泣、小偷喊疼、疯子胡言

每个小城，都有下跪的膝盖，颤抖的肩膀，摇晃的背影

每个小城，都有一个默默盯着这一切的城隍

让这些秘不发丧的故事，再一幕幕重演

Every smalltown has an old crank in faded army fatigues

with atarnished medal. His haggard face shows up on the street,

no one knows ifhe’s waiting to take a bullet, or looking for a comrade.

Every smalltown has a lonely little noodle shop.

The mistress incheap rouge sits by a greasy window,

knitting andunraveling and knitting a sweater.

No one knowsthe reasons why she smiles or frowns.

Every smalltown was a stopover for some mysterious circus.

They holleredup and down the muddy street for their stunts:

spitting fire,swallowing swords, and balancing plates.

No one knowswhat they buried under the arched bridge,

where theystayed the night and cried.

In every littletown, there are women who weep,

thieves who cryfor pain, and lunatics who spurt nonsense.

In every littletown, there are knees on the floor,

shoulderstrembling, and shadows staggering on the street.

Every smalltown has a deity quietly keeping watch,

guardingcertain mysteries from being revealed

and making surethey repeat again and again.
