All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances.

And one man in his time plays many parts,

His acts being seven ages.

At first the infant,

Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.

Then the whining school-boy, with his satchel

And so he plays his part.

The sixth age shifts

Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,

本诗节选自莎士比亚喜剧《皆大欢喜（As you like it）》，写尽了人的一生。《皆大欢喜》是莎士比亚创作的“四大喜剧”之一，故事场景主要发生在远离尘世的亚登森林中。大约创作于1598-1600年间。

作者简介

威廉·莎士比亚，英国文艺复兴时期伟大的戏剧家和诗人，于1564年4月23日出生在英国中部斯特拉福德城一个富裕的市民家庭（逝世于1616年的生日）。后来家道中落，在伦敦当了演员和编剧，与社会各阶层的生活有比较广泛的接触。

林语堂评价莎士比亚，说他最伟大的地方在于把人生当做人生看，而没有按照自己的偏见去曲解世间万物的存在方式，“他仅是活于世界上，观察人生，而终于跑开了。”
