While Mrs. Dursley was in the bathroom, Mr. Dursley crept to the bedroom window and peered down into the front garden. The cat was still there. It was staring down Privet Drive as though it were waiting for something.

Was he imagining things? Could all this have anything to do with the Potters? If it did … if it got out that they were related to a pair of — well, he didn’t think he could bear it.

The Dursleys got into bed. Mrs. Dursley fell asleep quickly but Mr. Dursley lay awake, turning it all over in his mind. His last, comforting thought before he fell asleep was that even if the Potters were involved, there was no reason for them to come near him and Mrs. Dursley. The Potters knew very well what he and Petunia thought about them and their kind. … He couldn’t see how he and Petunia could get mixed up in anything that might be going on — he yawned and turned over — it couldn’t affect them. …

How very wrong he was.

While Mrs. Dursley was in the bathroom, Mr. Dursley crept to the bedroom window and peered down into the front garden.

当德思礼太太在洗手间的时候，德思礼crept to the bedroom window。

crap原形动词creep， creep表示蹑手蹑脚的移动，德思礼蹑手蹑脚地走到他们卧室的窗口，然后peered down往下看看前花园。

The front garden前花园，其实就是靠着小路的garden，它在房子的前面，而在房子后面往往还有个back garden。

The cat was still there.那只猫还在那。

It was staring down Privet Drive as though it were waiting for something.

句中 staring down的 down跟前面Mr. Dursley peered down into the front garden，完全是两个不同的意思，peered down纯粹是说德斯里往下看，但这只猫站在这条路边，他没必要往下看看这条路。所以It was staring down Privet Drive表示顺着这条路看，沿着这个路的方向看去。

as though it were waiting for something，他仿佛在等着什么事情发生。

德斯里看到这一幕，仍然非常忐忑。

Was he imagining things?这一切都是他想象出来的吗？

Could all this have anything to do with the Potters?这一切有没有可能都跟波特一家有关？Have anything to do with someone跟前面It was something to do with someone意思差不多，都表示跟某人有关。

If it did，如果真的有关的话，if it got out that they were related to a pair of — well, he didn’t think he could bear it。

if it got out，这里的got out可不是get out让某人滚出去，got/get out在这里表示信息、消息等泄露开传被人们所知道。

他其实在想什么？如果人们知道了，这事一旦传开了， they were related to a pair of他们是有这样的一对亲戚，related可以理解成亲戚，所以是说他们两家人不仅有关，而且是亲戚关系。

a pair of一对什么人？这后面的词，德斯礼是想也不敢想，说也不敢说的，所以被省略掉了。那波特这对夫妇是什么样的人？这里卖个关子打个悬念。

well, he didn’t think he could bear it.

如果这消息传出去，人们知道的话，他觉得自己可真是受不住了。

The Dursleys got into bed.

德斯里夫妇上床睡觉了。

Mrs. Dursley fell asleep quickly but Mr. Dursley lay awake, turning it all over in his mind.

德斯礼太太无忧无虑的，很快就睡着了，但是德斯礼很清醒地躺着，turning it all over in his mind，turn something all over或turn something over，表示在脑子里面仔细的思考，深思熟虑，细细的想某事。一整天下来，这时候他脑子里面是千头万绪，在脑海里面翻来覆去地琢磨事情。

His last, comforting thought before he fell asleep was that even if the Potters were involved, there was no reason for them to come near him and Mrs. Dursley.

最后，一个让他感到很安慰的一个想法，在他入睡之前想出来的，even if the Potters were involved，即使跟波特一家真的有牵扯，他们跟这些古怪的事情真的有牵连。

come near不是来到某人附近或来到某人周围，这里表示影响到某人，牵扯到某人。所以他想的是哪怕波特一家真的跟这些破事有所牵扯，波特他们也没理由来影响他和他太太。

The Potters knew very well what he and Petunia thought about them and their kind. …

波特夫妇很清楚，知道德思礼和他太太是怎么想他们、怎么看他们以及他们那类人的，也就是波特夫妇很清楚德斯礼夫妇是不喜欢他们，厌恶他们的。

He couldn’t see how he and Petunia could get mixed up in anything that might be going on

he couldn't see并非是他看不见，而是他不认为，他不这么想。

他不认为他和他太太卷入到 in anything任何事情，但mighty be going on任何这种可能正在发生的这些事情，也就是说不管现在发生什么，他不认为他和他的太太会被卷入到这件事情里面，换句话说，不管发生什么，是否真的跟波特一家有关系，反正跟我们没关系。

he yawned and turned over

他打了个哈欠，翻了个身，It couldn't affect them，不会影响到他们。

turn over，这跟前面的turn it all over很像，但是意思并不一样，表示翻身。

How very wrong he was.

他可真是大错特错。

德斯礼忐忑了一整晚，最后睡着之前得出了一个结论：自己大错特错，都是想太多，实际上跟他们没有啥关系。

德思礼一家进入了梦乡，但是女贞路4号会有新的人物登场。
