Adam Smith is at the dentist's clinic today because he has been suffering with bad toothache on the right side of his mouth for over a week. He bought some painkillers from the chemist, but they did not help to ease the pain. Adam is afraid of dentists and for that reason; his last dental check-up was eight years ago. The dentist took some x-rays of his teeth and found he has three cavities that need to be seen to immediately. The dentist is drilling two of the cavities, but he will have to pull out the third tooth because there is nothing he can do to save it. The cavity is so large that it cannot be filled. As it seems, that is also the tooth that is causing him all that pain. Every time the dentist starts the drill, Adam holds the arms of the chair with fear. The dentist told him to relax, but he cannot. The dentist decided to tell him a story to take his mind off things. Adam has decided to take more care of his teeth in future!

下面来一句一句讲解。

这是一个原因状语从句，由because引导。

主句是Adam Smith is at the dentist's clinic today。

后面的从句讲了原因because he has been suffering with bad toothache on the right side of his mouth for over a week.

这个从句我们先看前面的because he has been suffering with bad toothache因为他一直牙疼

哪儿的牙呢？on the right side of his mouth他嘴里右边（的牙）

多长时间了？for over a week.一周多了。

从句的意思就是因为他嘴里右边的牙疼了一周多了。

整个句子的意思是： Adam Smith今天在牙科诊所看牙，因为他嘴里右边的牙疼了一周多了。

2.He bought some painkillers from the chemist, but they did not help to ease the pain.

这是一个由连词but引导的并列句。

but前面一个句子讲了他从药店买了一些止疼药；

but后面一个句子讲了但是他们（止疼药）没有帮着减轻疼痛。

整个句子的意思是：他从药店买了一些止疼药，但是他们（止疼药）没有帮着减轻疼痛。

3.Adam is afraid of dentists and for that reason; his last dental check-up was eight years ago.

这个句子不是很复杂，直接翻译句子意思：Adam很害怕牙医，就是因为这个原因，他上次牙齿检查是8年前.

4.The dentist took some x-rays of his teeth and found he has three cavities that need to be seen to immediately.

这是一个由连词and引导的并列句。

and前面一个句子讲了牙医给他的牙齿拍了X片；

and后面一个句子讲了医生看X片后发现他有3颗蛀牙。后面一个句子中that后是个定语从句，that修饰先行词three cavities，意思是他有3颗需要马上治疗的蛀牙。

整个句子的意思是：牙医给他的牙齿拍了X片，并发现他有3颗需要马上治疗的蛀牙。

5.The dentist is drilling two of the cavities, but he will have to pull out the third tooth because there is nothing he can do to save it.

这是一个由连词but引导的并列句。

but前面一个句子讲了牙医治疗了两个蛀牙；

but后面一个句子是复杂句，由because引导的原因状语从句。主句意思是“他需要拔掉第3颗牙齿(he will have to pull out the third tooth)”，原因是他没有其他办法来治疗它(there is nothing he can do to save it)。

整个句子的意思是：牙医治疗了两个蛀牙，但是他需要拔掉第3颗牙齿，因为他没有其他办法来治疗它。

6. The cavity is so large that it cannot be filled.

这个句子比较好理解：这个蛀牙太大了，以至于被办法被补好。

需要注意的是so...that...句型，意思是“如此……以至于”。.

7.As it seems, that is also the tooth that is causing him all that pain.

As it seems看上去像是

第1个that指代的是前面提到的第3颗牙齿。

that is also the tooth 意思是“那也正是那颗牙齿”。

哪颗牙齿呢？后面的that引导的定语从句，修饰前面的the tooth。那颗给他带来疼痛的牙齿(is causing him all that pain)。

整个句子的意思是：看上去像是，那也是一直给他带来疼痛的牙齿。

8.Every time the dentist starts the drill, Adam holds the arms of the chair with fear.

Everytime引导的时间状语从句，意思是“每次”。

Every time the dentist starts the drill从句的意思是“每次牙医开始治疗时”

主句(Adam holds the arms of the chair with fear.)的意思是“Adam害怕地抓住椅子的扶手”。

整个句子的意思是：每次牙医开始治疗时，Adam都害怕地抓住椅子的扶手。

9.The dentist told him to relax, but he cannot.

这句也是由but引导的并列句。

but前面一个句子讲了牙医让他放松；

but后面一个句子讲了但是他不能。

整个句子的意思是：牙医让他放松，但是他不能。

10.The dentist decided to tell him a story to take his mind off things.

这句话的意思是牙医决定给他讲个故事，让他转移注意力。

take one's mind off things把注意力从事物上移开

11.Adam has decided to take more care of his teeth in future!

这句话的意思是Adam决定以后要好好照顾他的牙齿。

take care of照顾

in future将来

整篇文章中的第1、4、5、7比较复杂，其他的句子都还比较好理解。

复杂句看着复杂，只要认真分析其结构，找到主句，找到引导词，就好理解意思了。
