第58课 A blessing in disguise?

1、The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a 'cursed tree'.

of 介词，表示同位关系，例如：the city of New York

is said 据说，是被动语态

2、Because the tree was mentioned in the newspaper, the number of visitors to Frinley

has now increased.

注意主语是 the number, 所以谓语动词也是单数形式 has increased.

还要注意介词 to 的用法，这里表示到......地方

3、Many villagers believe that the tree has already claimed a number of victims.

claim 这里的意思是，因为灾难或者事故使某人失踪或者死亡

例句：The earthquake claimed thousands of lives.

claim 还可以表示要求或者索要什么

例句：She claims ownership of the land.

4、The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down.

has been asked 被动语态

have the tree cut down 叫别人把树砍掉

have sth. down 叫别人做某事

例句：She is going to have the house painted.

5、In spite of all that has been said, the tourists have been picking leaves and cutting

their names on the tree-trunk.

in spite of 介词短语，后面只能跟名词或名词性从句，此句中后面跟的是代词all，all 后面又跟了 that 引导的定语从句，that 在这个定语从句中起的是主语的作用，所以不能像做宾语那样省略。

另外，在all 后面跟定语从句时，关系代词只能用that, 不能用which

例句：I've done all that has to be done.

6、So far, not one of them has been struck down by sudden death!

so far 一般要跟现在完成时连用

strike down 击倒，使死去

7、It is only in recent years that it has gained an evil reputation.

这是一个强调句，强调的是 only in recent years
