BIG or LARGE?

● BIG and LARGE are both used to talk about size or dimensions. They can usually be used interchangeably and can only be used with countable nouns. BIG is the word you usually use in conversation. LARGE is a little more formal.

● BIG和LARGE均可用来谈论尺寸或规模，通常可以互换使用，只能修饰可数名词。BIG常用于日常口语，LARGE相对来说要正式一些。

★ He has a big/large house.

★ 他有一座大房子。

★ His speeches always draw a big/large crowd.

★ 他的演讲总能吸引一大批观众。

★ ‘Where is Andy?’ – ‘Over there, by that big tree.’

★ ‘安迪在哪里？’ - ‘那边，那棵大树旁。’

★ The driver swerved to avoid a large tree.

★ 司机转弯以避开一棵大树。

BIG:

● When you mean VERY IMPORTNAT, use BIG:

● 当表示“十分重要”，用BIG：

★ Moving to a new country is a big decision.

★ Winning this contest is a big thing.

★ My big boss (importance, like CEO)

● When you mean OLDER (informal), use BIG:

● When you mean SERIOUS, use BIG:

● 当表示“严重的”，用BIG：

● When you mean POWERFUL, use BIG:

Fixed Expressions with BIG:

● Big deal: an important thing or person 大事、要事、大人物

★ I felt the pressure on me, winning was such a big deal for the whole family.

● Big fish: an important, successful or influential person 大人物、要人

★ Meeting a big fish like the company's CEO can be quite an intimidating experience for an intern.

● Big name: a person of great importance, fame, success or reputation知名人士

★ There will be a lot of big names at the conference tomorrow.

● The Big Apple: a nickname for New York City 大苹果城（纽约市的别称）

★ We spent the weekend in the Big Apple.

● To think big: to be ambitious 雄心勃勃

★ You have to think big to achieve great things.

★ 你必须要雄心勃勃才能成就大事。

● To see/focus on the big picture: to focus on the most important parts of a situation, rather than the smaller details关注大局、关注整体情况

★ We need to focus on the big picture if we want to finish the project on time.

★ 要想按时完成项目，我们需要关注大局。

● To have a big mouth: to be a gossiper; to be a person who tells secrets 口无遮拦、爱说闲话

★ Be careful with him, he has a big mouth.

★ 要提防他些，他口无遮拦。

● To have eyes bigger than one’s stomach: to take more food than one is actually capable of eating 眼大肚子小

★ Could you help me finish these chips? I have eyes bigger than my stomach.

★ 你能帮我吃完这些薯条吗？我眼馋肚饱，吃不下了。

● To have bigger fish to fry: to have more important things to do 有更重要的事情要做

★ It's really not worth my time. I've got bigger fish to fry!

● A big spender: a person who spends lots of money 大手大脚花钱的人

★ The restaurant gives the big spenders special treatment.

★ 餐馆给大金主们提供特殊待遇。

● A big eater: eats a lot 饭量大的人

★ He's a big eater.

★ 他饭量很大。

LARGE:

● Use LARGE with Quantity Words:

● 数量词前，用LARGE：

a large amount/on a large scale/a large number of/ a large quantity of/a large proportion/ to a large extent/a large percentage of/a large part of/ a large volume/a large area

★ We invested a large amount of money in that project.

★ 我们在该项目上投入了大量的资金。

★ We have other points to cover but, to a large extent, the new company policies are the reason for the meeting.

★ 我们还有其它点要讨论，但召开此次会议的主要原因是讨论公司的新政策。

★ They export large quantities of corn.

★ 他们出口大量的玉米。

★ Our headquarter premises cover a very large area on the outskirts of the city.

★ 我们的总部位于该城市的郊区，占地面积很大。

● Use LARGE for body sizes:

● 形容体型，用LARGE:

★ Please, go talk to the chairman of the conference, he's super nice. If you don't know him, he is the large man in the navy suit.

● When you order something in a restaurant, you use Large because the sizes are going to be Small, Medium and Large.

Fixed Expressions with LARGE:

● At large: free, not captured yet 在逃的 OR as a whole, in general 整个、大体上

★ The police haven’t caught the thief yet; he is still at large.

★ 警察还没有抓到那个小偷，他仍然在逃。

★ There has been a loss of community values in society at large.

★ 在整个社会中，社区价值已经丧失。

● By and large: in general, overall 大体上、总的说来

★ By and large, the company has been very good to me over the last couple of years.
