A woman died after cutting her leg at a beach in Florida, and her family is raising awareness about the flesh-eating bacteria that killed her.

Lynn Fleming, 77, fell and cut herself while walking on a beach two weeks ago on Anna Maria Island.

"There was a little depression that she couldn't see because it was under the water," said Wade Fleming, her son, to FOX 13 in Tampa.

"She fell into it, came out with a little three-quarters-inch cut, a bump on her leg. It was just a small cut, didn't think much of it. We got the swelling down, but it just kept bleeding."

In the days following her fall, Lynn Fleming's condition worsened, according to daughter-in-law Traci Fleming.

Later, when Lynn Fleming was found unconscious in her home, she was rushed to the emergency room by ambulance and diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a rare but deadly bacterial infection that kills the body's soft tissue.

It is the second case of necrotizing fasciitis reported at a Florida beach in the past month.

Earlier This Month: Girl, 12, diagnosed with flesh-eating bacteria after Florida beach trip

Causes: A rise in cases of flesh-eating bacteria may be linked to climate change, doctors say

"On top of this she has suffered from two strokes and has suffered from kidney failure," Traci Fleming wrote in a June 26 post on Facebook, where she chronicled her mother-in-law's condition. "Her entire body is septic."

Fleming published a photo to Facebook on June 27 with news of her mother-in-law's death.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say one in three peoplewho contract the flesh-eating bacteria die. Since 2010, there have been between 700 and 1,200 cases annually, though the CDC says that's likely an underestimation.

(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)表示,三分之一感染食肉细菌的人会死亡。

Although deadly, a bacterial infection like necrotizing fasciitis can be prevented if wounds are given good care, according to the CDC.

"They can be treated," Wade Fleming said. "You get the open wound while playing at the beach, watch it, take care of it."

The CDC recommends cleaning all minor cuts and injuries that break the skin (like blisters and scrapes) with soap and water and then covering them with clean, dry bandages until they heal.

If it seems like more than a minor cut, the CDC recommends seeing a doctor.

Early symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis include swelling, severe pain and fever.

"Maybe if she was diagnosed a little earlier, you know, maybe we'd be sitting here talking to my mom without a leg, but you know, with a life," Wade Fleming said.

Tampa Hospital Emergency Medicine's Dr. Jason Wilson told FOX 13 that however scary this disease is, people contract it very rarely.

"Most people who go into the water will never experience this," he said.

I clean all wounds with soap and water followed by hydrogen peroxide. Signs and symptoms of infection are pain, warmth at the wound, fever, redness at the wound, swelling at the wound. Pain to me seems the best indicator.

Growing up at the beach our parents always told us if we had a cut that the salt water was the best thing for it. I always thought flesh eating disease was a fresh water issue. This is scary!

You're parents were correct, despite the naysayers here. It's what happens to the wound after you leave the salt water. when infection from the sand and earth get into it after the saltwater, really bad things can attach, invade and grow rampantly if not cleaned!

Millions of people at the beach every day without issues, it's pretty rare.

When going to the beach, or anywhere for that matter, take a first aid kit along with you. I carry one in my car. It's always good practice to thoroughly clean and bandage a wound right away. Even a small wound. Never take a chance on infection of any kind.

A relative of mine died of this year after scratching her leg on a dishwasher in her home. She was overweight and likely diabetic. Standard antibiotics didn't work and it took over fast. Within a week she had to have her leg amputated and though they thought they got all of the infection she died a day or two later. My take away is that it's important to clean cuts after they happen and covered and seek medical assistance ASAP if your body is reacting abnormally after a cut. Most people recover with this stuff not being any deal at all, but there can be exceptions like I just cited.

I've pretty much written off ever going into a natural body of water again. Way too many of these stories nowadays. Sigh.
